Cliff Bee Conservation Program

A field program to support sustainable harvesting practices and habitat safeguards for Apis laboriosa, aligned with ethical compliance requirements for responsible trade.

Project Overview

The Cliff Bee Conservation Program is an IMHSI field initiative focused on safeguarding Apis laboriosa (Himalayan cliff bee) habitats while strengthening sustainable harvesting practices.

This work supports ethical compliance standards by translating conservation principles into practical field guidance, so responsible sourcing can be verified, not simply claimed.

Problem Statement

The long-term viability of Himalayan cliff honey depends on ecological balance. Habitat pressures, including land-use change, biodiversity loss, and inconsistent harvesting practices, can undermine bee populations and the surrounding rhododendron ecosystems.

Without clear standards, sustainability becomes subjective. IMHSI’s goal is to define verifiable field practices that protect biodiversity while supporting community livelihoods connected to traditional cliff harvesting.

Output: Sustainable harvest framework • audit indicators • habitat safeguard guidance

Objectives

  • Define sustainable harvesting principles that can be audited under ethical compliance frameworks
  • Support habitat protection safeguards relevant to Apis laboriosaand local ecosystems
  • Establish field indicators for monitoring ecological pressure and harvesting impact
  • Strengthen community-aligned practices that support long-term livelihoods and responsible trade

Methodology

  • Biodiversity and habitat field surveys in designated harvesting zones
  • Community workshops to document harvesting practices and risk points
  • Environmental impact assessments to identify sustainability indicators
  • Collaboration with local specialists to translate findings into practical field guidance and audit criteria

Focus is on measurable practices and documentation, not marketing claims.

Partners Involved

  • Local honey-hunting cooperatives supporting field practice documentation
  • Conservation and biodiversity specialists advising habitat safeguards
  • Regional researchers supporting ecological observation and reporting

Partner engagement is published in line with IMHSI independence and conflict-of-interest policies.
